Model United Nations Security Council

At the core of SUNIA is our model Security Council. Model United Nations (or MUN) is an educational simulation of the real United Nations, where your role is to act as the delegate of a nation and debate with the other delegates about the chosen topic. Throughout the week, counsellors will help you prepare to represent one of the 15 member states on the UN Security Council. The Security Council is one of the UN committees and is responsible for tackling issues concerning peace and security. The goal is to encourage collaborative discussions to reach a peaceful resolution on the issue at hand. This simulation will be an opportunity to improve your public speaking and critical thinking skills as well as your knowledge of foreign policy and the United Nations.

If you’re new to MUN don’t worry; most students at SUNIA are, and we’ll teach you everything you need to know out at camp. All the information you need to know is provided at SUNIA by the counsellors, so no prior research is necessary. That being said, reach out to our SC expert Daniel (daniel@sunia.ca) if you have any burning questions before then.

Bar-V-Nok

SUNIA takes place at Camp Bar-V-Nok, near Pigeon Lake Alberta. Apart from being the perfect location for outdoor recreation, Camp Bar-V-Nok provides students with heated cabins, fully-equipped bathrooms, and three fresh meals and snacks every day.

WRECK

“WRECK” is our word for recreation. At SUNIA you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the crisp country air. Here you’ll get the chance to swim and canoe on Bar-V-Nok Lake, and participate in outdoor games like capture the flag, soccer, and frisbee. 

In the event of bad weather, Camp Bar-V-Nok is well-equipped for indoor recreation.  If you’re curious about WRECK and have any questions, reach out to our WRECK coordinator Josh (josh@sunia.ca)!

Discussion Groups

In small groups, with students and counsellors, you’ll get the chance to discuss a range of topics. We leave these loosely structured so you can discuss the subjects you find most interesting, whether it be pop culture or politics.

Involvement Workshops

These workshops are an opportunity for you to work directly with other students to develop the skills necessary to make a change in your community, country, or the world.

Press Conference

This is where you’ll observe and participate in debates on social issues in the form of a mock press conference. Some of our favourite Press Conferences have been about copyright laws, free speech, and e-sports!
